森岳温泉
The hot spring waters of Mitane’s Moritake Onsen area are known for their high temperatures and unusually high levels of sodium and calcium salts.
Moritake Onsen's hot spring was discovered accidentally during oil drilling in 1952, with water emerging from the ground at nearly 60 degrees Celsius. The spring is among the saltiest in Japan and is said to help with skin conditions. The area is also known for junsai nabe, a seasonal hotpot featuring hinai-jidori chicken and watershield, a delicate aquatic plant that grows in shallow ponds. Mitane is Japan's largest producer of watershield, and the hotpot is only available from May to August during the harvest. Several lodging options are available, including a traditional ryokan and a municipal facility with some wheelchair-accessible rooms.
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
