Momosuke Bridge

Momosuke Bridge, built in 1922, stretches 247 meters across the Kiso River, making it the longest wooden suspension bridge in Japan. It was constructed to carry materials to the nearby Yomikaki Power Plant. The entrepreneur behind both projects, Momosuke Fukuzawa, chose this wider section of the river over a narrower, cheaper location because he preferred the scale it allowed. The original bridge used chestnut, pine, and cedar and was closed in 1978 as the wood deteriorated. After two years of restoration, it reopened in 1993, rebuilt with local sawara and hinoki. From the central pier, steps lead down to a sandbar with a small shrine to the river deity.
