Hirata is a fascinating pocket of old storehouses, merchant homes, and breweries with unique atmosphere.
The Momen Kaido (Cotton Road) in Izumo's Hirata district preserves a streetscape of Edo-era merchant homes, sake breweries, and white-walled storehouses that once thrived on the cotton trade. Walking the quiet lane feels like stepping into a period drama set, dark wooden lattice fronts, noren curtains, and the faint smell of fermenting sake from the working breweries. Several buildings are open to visitors, including a soy sauce warehouse and a sake tasting room. It is an atmospheric hour-long stroll that reveals a side of Izumo beyond the famous Grand Shrine.
