Mojikō Station

Mojiko Station, built in 1914 near the waterfront, served for over a century as Kyushu's main rail connection to the mainland and the world. The two-story wooden structure is covered in textured mortar shaped to resemble stone, with a mansard roof, ironwork, and Neo-Renaissance symmetry that reads as a gateway to the port city. After six years of renovation, it reopened in 2019 with original marble fireplaces preserved as an exhibit in the former first-class waiting room. A platform fountain labeled 'homecoming water' marks where returning soldiers and repatriated citizens took their first drink on home soil. A cafe now operates in what was the third-class waiting room.
