Overview

Mizuki Shigeru Road is an 800-meter stretch of the main shopping street from Sakaiminato Station that celebrates the world-famous manga artist who was raised in this city.

An 800-meter shopping street in Sakaiminato is lined with 177 bronze statues of yokai from the work of manga artist Mizuki Shigeru, who grew up in the city. The statues reference characters from his best-known series GeGeGe no Kitaro as well as creatures from Japanese mythology and folklore. A yokai shrine along the route offers spirit fortune-telling slips and a postal delivery service. At night, over 50 computer-controlled projectors cast moving shadow figures onto the street. Mizuki himself appears in statue form, shown with his wife Nunoe and at his drawing table alongside Medamaoyaji, Nezumiotoko, and Kitaro. The Mizuki Shigeru Museum stands at the far end of the road.
