宮島
Sacred island crowned by a floating vermillion torii gate, ancient shrines, wild deer, and forested Mount Misen.
Miyajima, officially known as Itsukushima, is one of Japan's three most scenic views and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is best known for its iconic floating torii gate that appears to hover above the water at high tide. Beyond the gate, the Itsukushima Shrine complex stretches over the tidal flats on stilts, its vermillion corridors framing views of the Seto Inland Sea. Dense primeval forests cover Mount Misen, accessible by ropeway, with panoramic views from the summit. Friendly wild deer roam the streets alongside visitors, and Omotesando shopping street serves local specialties including momiji manju (maple leaf cakes) and fresh grilled oysters. The island is particularly stunning during autumn foliage and the evening illumination of the shrine.
