Overview

With a focus on the marine life of the Seto Inland Sea, Miyajima Aquarium is the best place to see what is under the water surrounding the island.

Miyajima Aquarium sits on the island's western shore and centers its exhibits on the marine life of the Seto Inland Sea. The building was fully renovated in 2011 with a traditional facade and a red-and-white entrance hall that echoes Itsukushima Shrine nearby. Inside, a glass tank replicates the Miyajima coastline with working tidal cycles, and a second-floor display recreates a floating oyster farm like those visible offshore. The aquarium houses around 350 species, most caught locally. The finless porpoise tank is a draw, as these are the only mammals native to the inland sea. A sea lion performance runs multiple times daily at the outdoor pool.
