Overview

The Miyagawa flows from the mountains of the Odaigahara plateau through Mie Prefecture to Ise Bay, passing within walking distance of Ise Grand Shrine. Ranked repeatedly among Japan's cleanest rivers in national water quality surveys, the water runs clear enough to see the stony riverbed from the banks. In summer, cormorant fishing boats lit by pine torches drift downriver after dark near the Okage Yokocho district. Cherry trees line a long stretch of the embankment at Miyagawa-zutsumi, drawing crowds during bloom season in early April. Families wade in the shallows during warmer months, and the wide gravel bars serve as picnic spots year-round. The river's proximity to the outer shrine of Ise Jingu makes it a natural pause between shrine visits and the lively Okage Yokocho shopping street.
