Misono-za
performing_arts
Nagoya's primary kabuki theater, hosting touring Tokyo troupes and traditional dance programs.
Nagoya's primary kabuki and traditional-performance venue, opened in 1897 and rebuilt in 2018 after a long run in the original Showa-era building. The Tokyo Shochiku troupes tour here several times a year for week-long runs of full kabuki programs; the rest of the calendar is filled with traditional dance, manzai, and occasional contemporary plays. English audio guides for kabuki performances are available at the box office for 800 yen, and the theater has a small lobby café for the long intermissions. Performances run roughly four hours; matinees start at 11 AM, evenings at 4:30 PM.
Single-act tickets ("hitomakumi-seki") for kabuki performances are sold day-of from a window 30 minutes before each act, and cost a fraction of the full price. Best entry point for a first kabuki experience.
