Misogi Shrine

身曾岐神社
Shrine established 1985 following ancient and rare Shinto sect practices nearly extinct in contemporary Japan.
Established in 1985, Misogi Shrine is relatively modern but follows an ancient and rare sect of Shinto focused on misogi, ritual purification through cold water immersion. The shrine sits in the highlands of Kobuchizawa near Hokuto, surrounded by forests with the Yatsugatake mountains as a backdrop. While visitors aren't expected to participate in the water purification rites, the shrine's serene forested setting and unusual spiritual focus make it a distinctive stop. The architecture blends traditional shrine design with the natural landscape, and the grounds are quiet enough that you're likely to have the place largely to yourself.
