Misogi is a Shinto purification ritual conducted in the natural and historic setting of Shirayama-Hime Shrine.
Shinto purification ritual conducted at Shirayama-Hime Shrine, using water that has filtered through the rock of sacred Mt. Hakusan over centuries. Guided by the shrine's priests, participants wade into a pond, recite purification prayers, and perform the ritual movements. The ceremony runs roughly two and a half hours and accommodates groups of five to forty people. Fees are 4,000 yen per participant plus a separate charge for ritual clothing. Men wear a white fundoshi and women wear a white kimono, available to rent or purchase. Reservations are required at least one week in advance by contacting the Hakusan City Tourism League, with same-day reservations sometimes possible for larger groups.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
