Visitors to Mino Washi Paper Museum can learn about washi in Mino through displays of tools and materials, detailed dioramas, videos, and hands-on workshops.
Mino has been producing washi paper for over 1,300 years, and the Mino Washi Paper Museum in Gifu Prefecture traces that history from the earliest-known example of Mino washi dated to 702. Displays cover the full papermaking process through dioramas, tools, and videos, with English signage throughout. A large map of Japan shows lanterns made from regional washi styles, highlighting how techniques vary by area. Workshops run several times daily for making postcards or decorated sheets, taking under an hour and suitable for most ages. Reservations are required. The museum shop sells items made from Mino washi and the cafe offers light refreshments.
