美濃市うだつの上がる町並み
Japan's best-preserved udatsu merchant row and 1,300-year washi papermaking tradition with workshops.
Mino's merchant district preserves the highest concentration of udatsu fire walls in Japan, the ornate clay barriers between rooftops that historically signaled a family's wealth. The town has been a center of Mino washi handmade paper for 1,300 years, and several workshops invite visitors to make their own sheets. During the October Akari Art festival, hundreds of paper lanterns illuminate the streets.
