Shingon temple set in a 50,000-square-meter flower garden; hydrangeas in June and azaleas in May are the signatures.
A Shingon temple founded in 770, set in a 50,000-square-meter flower garden on the hillside east of central Uji. The temple is best known for its 20,000 hydrangeas (June bloom) and 20,000 azaleas (mid-April to early May); the autumn-foliage season in November adds maple to the rotation. The main hall is a 1814 reconstruction; the lotus pond in front of the hall blooms late July through August.
Entry 1,000 yen during flower seasons (May azalea, June hydrangea, November koyo), 500 yen otherwise. Sunrise during peak hydrangea bloom is the photo window.
