Preserved Meiji-era port town of white granaries and cobblestone lanes where Emperor Jimmu allegedly sailed east.
A designated Important Preservation District of historic buildings that thrived as a trading port with Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe from the late 19th through early 20th centuries. White-walled earthen granaries, wooden merchant houses, and cobblestone streets remain largely intact above the Mimi River. Local mythology holds that Emperor Jimmu departed from this harbor on his legendary eastward expedition to found Japan.
