Overview
Birthplace of cultured pearls, with live ama-diver demos and a 1,200-pearl necklace display.
On the tiny island where Mikimoto Kokichi succeeded in cultivating the world's first pearl in 1893, a museum traces the science from oyster nucleation to finished jewelry. Live ama-diver demonstrations run every 30 minutes, showing the traditional free-diving technique used for pearl harvesting. The collection includes a pearl-encrusted globe and a five-strand necklace with 1,200 Akoya pearls.
