Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Museum
御食国若狭おばま食文化館
Overview
The Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum opened in September 2003 to advance the city’s food-related community-development goals.
The Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum traces the food history of Obama, a port city that supplied Kyoto with mackerel via the Mackerel Road for centuries. The ground floor has food model exhibits and a game about the Mackerel Road route, while the Kitchen Studio offers hands-on cooking classes in Japanese dishes. The second floor hosts the Wakasa Workshop for traditional crafts including Japanese paper, Wakasa lacquer chopsticks, and agate stonework, with local craftspeople working on-site. The neighboring restaurant Hama no shiki serves regional Obama cuisine, and on the third floor a public bath looks out over Wakasa Bay. The museum is open to school groups and general visitors for food education programs.
