Overview

Historic, still-active coal port featuring a unique lock system designed for drastic tides.

An engineering marvel of the Meiji era, this port was built with a hummingbird-shaped lock system to overcome the massive tidal shifts of the Ariake Sea. It allowed large ships to load coal directly. The port is still fully operational today, beautifully blending historic design with active maritime use.

Local tips

Visit the nearby Old Nagasaki Customs Miike Branch office for historical context before viewing the active docks.
