Vast Tendai temple complex overlooking Lake Biwa, housing important treasures and a bell featured in classic literature.
Miidera is the head temple of the Tendaijimon sect, located at the foot of Mt. Nagara near Otsu, and one of four temples historically responsible for the spiritual protection of Kyoto. The main hall, a National Treasure built in 1599, sits near a bell tower housing a famous bell that inspired one of the Eight Views of Omi, a classic selection of scenic subjects in poetry and art. The grounds hold 10 National Treasures and 42 Important Cultural Properties spread across 300 acres. In spring, cherry blossoms line the hillside paths, and the Kannondo Hall above offers views over Lake Biwa.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
