Overview

Cape Jizozaki on the Shimane Peninsula marks a major coastal bird migration route with spring and autumn flyovers of flycatchers and thrushes.

Mihonoseki, on the eastern tip of the Shimane Peninsula, is located on a major coastal bird migration route. In spring, summer birds such as the oruri, or blue-and-white flycatcher (Cyanoptila cyanomelana), and the kibitaki or narcissus flycatcher (Ficedula narcissina) pass by on the way back from their wintering areas in Southeast Asia, while winter birds like the shirohara/pale thrush (Turdus pallidus) head north to breed. Birds such as the uguisu/Japanese bush warbler (Cettia diphone), mejiro/Japanese white-eye (Zosterops japonicus), and hiyodori/brown-eared bulbul (Hypsipetes amaurotis) also migrate around this time. In autumn, the birds pass by again on their southward journey from breeding to wintering grounds. From the left: blue-and-white flycatcher; narcissus flycatcher; pale thrush; Japanese white-eye; brown-eared bulbul
