東寺 御影堂
Kobo Daishi's former residence at Toji, free to visit in the temple's western precinct.
The Mieido at Toji, also called Saiin Mieido or Daishido, stands on the site of Kobo Daishi Kukai's residence within the temple grounds. The current building dates from 1380 and is designated a National Treasure — three connected structures (front hall, middle gate, rear hall) sitting in a quiet walled precinct west of Toji's main paid area. A statue of Kobo Daishi is enshrined inside, and the hall remains a working place of worship: a memorial service for the founder is held every morning at 6 AM, and the building stays free to enter even when the rest of Toji charges admission.
Remove shoes before entering any hall. Look for a shoe rack at the entrance. Carry a plastic bag for your shoes if none is provided.
