Sturgeon and souvenirs.
Two roadside stations in Shikaoi town in central Hokkaido offer distinct local character. The Shikaoi station in the town center sells regional produce and souvenirs including Shikaoi-yaki pottery and jewelry made from local igneous rock, with a live sturgeon tank near the entrance, the fish being locally farmed and served at select restaurants in town. The Urimaku station on the outskirts is themed around horses, with horse figurines, toys, and a booking counter for riding sessions at the adjacent Shikaoi Riding Park. Sessions are open to all ages and skill levels, from gentle paddock rides to lessons that include grooming.
