Overview

Large rock suspended in cave hole for tens of thousands of years, surviving Kumamoto earthquakes intact.

Large boulder suspended inside a cave in the Minami Aso highlands, lodged in a gap in the rock rather than resting on the ground. It survived the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake without shattering, and locals have since associated it with luck and good fortune. The path to the cave winds through primitive forest and rocky terrain on a privately maintained mountain trail that makes for easy adventure trekking. Entry costs 500 yen, and guided tours require advance reservation at least three days ahead. The combination of geology, folklore, and forest walk makes it a rewarding stop near Aso.
