Overview
This memorial at the summit of Mt. Omine commemorates the Naval Battle of the Sea of Japan on May 27, 1905, when Admiral Togo Heihachiro's fleet destroyed two-thirds of the Russian force in the Tsushima Strait, effectively ending the Russo-Japanese War. Built in 1934, the structure loosely resembles the forward deck and cannon of Togo's flagship, the battleship Mikasa. Two bronze plaques depict Togo and the signal flag he had hoisted before battle, relaying the message 'Let each man do his utmost.' Behind the memorial is a small overlook facing the strait where the battle took place.
