Meiji Jingu Shrine
明治神宮
4.6Est. 90Tokyo, Kanto
The 70-hectare forest absorbs city noise the moment you pass the south torii. The shrine itself, completed in 1920, sits behind a 12-meter cypress gate built from 1,500-year-old wood. Most travelers miss the wine cask wall directly across from the famous sake barrels. The inner iris garden costs 500 yen, worth it only in mid-June bloom.
Local tips
Take the left fork at the entrance for the less-crowded path through the iris garden, free in June.
