Meigetsuin

Known as the "hydrangea temple," Meigetsuin draws visitors in June when thousands of blue hydrangeas line the approach path in a stunning corridor of color. Beyond the seasonal spectacle, the temple is famous for its circular "window of enlightenment", a perfectly round opening in a tatami room that frames the garden behind it like a living painting, shifting with the seasons. Founded in 1159, the temple also holds the tomb of Hojo Tokiyori, one of Kamakura's most powerful regents. Autumn brings a second bloom of color when a normally closed rear garden opens for maple viewing.
