Overview

The Maze Satoyama Museum is an extensive ecotourism site stretching 28 kilometers along the banks of the Maze (pronounced mah-zay) River.

Living landscape of Maze village in the mountains of southern Gifu, stretching 28 kilometers along the Maze River. Each summer, fishermen demonstrate hiburi-ryo night fishing with torches and nets to catch ayu sweetfish, which are grilled and served throughout the village. Local farmers grow rice, tomatoes, blueberries, and magnolia leaves, the last of which are used to wrap sushi or as a base for hoba-yaki grilling. Accommodation ranges from onsen ryokan to campgrounds. Mountain Life Hida, run by an international team, organizes guided outdoor activities including canyoning and fishing. Maze is around 30 minutes by car from Gero Onsen.
