Overview
Strong medicinal onsen known as one of Japan's 'Three Great Medicinal Springs'.
Matsunoyama Onsen is famous for its high-temperature, salt-rich water that is believed to be fossilized seawater from 12 million years ago. Taka-no-yu is the primary public bathhouse in the village. The water is highly concentrated with minerals and has a distinctive petroleum-like scent, which is a hallmark of its therapeutic strength. The facility features a modern indoor bath and a small outdoor area. Because the water is so potent, it is known for warming the body to the core, making it a favorite for those visiting the 'Snow Country' during the heavy Niigata winters. The onsen is welcoming to all travelers and maintains a local, friendly atmosphere.
Local tips
Wash thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the bath. This is non-negotiable etiquette. Bring a small towel but keep it out of the water.
