Overview
A century-old lighthouse on a remote cape with a cafe inside, overlooking where the Sea of Japan meets the Nakaumi lagoon.
This 1898 stone lighthouse sits on Cape Jizo, where the Sea of Japan meets the Nakaumi lagoon and the Shimane Peninsula ends. The drive or bike ride to the cape through fishing villages is half the experience. The lighthouse cafe serves coffee with panoramic ocean views, and on clear days you can see the Oki Islands.
Local tips
Stop at Mihonoseki village on the way. The old port has a tiny Ebisu shrine (origin of the Ebisu god) and serves fresh squid sashimi.
