Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616) and Matsudaira Chikauji (d.
Matsudaira Toshogu Shrine enshrines both Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the shogunate that ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867, and his ancestor Matsudaira Chikauji, first head of the family line. The pairing makes this shrine different from most Toshogu sanctuaries, which enshrine Ieyasu alone. The grounds stand on the former Matsudaira estate. A Toshogu shrine was first established here in 1619, and the current building was rebuilt in 1931 after the estate was dismantled. The worship hall ceiling was renovated in 2015 with 108 painted images of local flowers and plants by Toyota-based lacquer artist Ando Noriyoshi.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
