Maruo Onsen

The main hot-spring village on Kirishima's lower slopes, where sulfur-tinged waters are fed by the volcanic activity above. The Maruo Falls, a small cascade of naturally heated mineral water, runs through the village center, and visitors can soak in rotenburo (outdoor baths) at ryokan with views across Kagoshima Bay to Sakurajima. The surrounding forests offer hiking trails through Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park.
