craft
丸益西村屋
Kyo-yuzen silk dyeing workshop in a historic Kyoto machiya, from beginner stenciling to advanced freehand.
A preserved Kyoto townhouse where visitors learn Kyo-yuzen, the art of hand-painting intricate designs on silk using rice-paste resist. The studio has been operating since the Meiji era and offers both simple stencil dyeing and advanced freehand painting courses.
The furoshiki (wrapping cloth) dyeing course is the best value. A useful, beautiful souvenir for about 3,000 yen.
