Overview
A native of Kagawa, Inokuma Genichiro (1902–1993) was an artist who grew up in Marugame, studied in Tokyo and Paris, and afterwards spent long periods working in New York and Hawaii.
Right in front of Marugame Station, MIMOCA holds around 20,000 works donated by Kagawa-born artist Inokuma Genichiro, who was mentored by Henri Matisse and worked across painting, sculpture, illustration, and design. The building was designed by Taniguchi Yoshio, the same architect who redesigned New York's Museum of Modern Art. Its boxy exterior is softened by three large Inokuma sculptures and a mural at the entrance. Inside, plain lighting and clean angles let the art lead. Several rotating special exhibitions featuring contemporary Japanese and international artists run throughout the year.
