Overview
High-altitude sulfur onsen at 1,800m offering incredible 'sea of clouds' views.
Manza Onsen is one of Japan's highest-altitude hot spring resorts, and the Prince Hotel offers one of its most spectacular outdoor baths. The pools are set on a mountain ridge, providing panoramic views that often overlook a literal sea of clouds in the morning. The water is a potent milky-white sulfur spring, among the most sulfurous in Japan. The outdoor area features multiple tiered stone pools. While it is a major resort hotel, it is surprisingly tolerant of tattoos for international travelers, provided they are not overtly offensive. It is an incredible winter destination, as the high-altitude snow creates a surreal, monochrome landscape around the steaming pools.
