Overview

Monumental Meiji-era coal mine ruins featuring massive brick buildings and steel machinery.

Once the largest coal mine in Japan, this site features incredibly well-preserved red-brick buildings and giant steel headframes. Visitors can walk right up to the massive steam-powered winding machines that lowered miners deep underground. It offers a raw look into the heavy industry that built modern Japan.

Local tips

Wear clothes you do not mind getting a little dusty, as you can walk very close to the old, unpolished machinery.
