Miyajima is famous for its oysters, but the island's conger eel tradition is just as old and considerably less crowded. Mametanuki serves anagomeshi, a wooden box of seasoned rice topped with grilled conger eel, alongside steamed anago dumplings. The eel has a softer, more delicate flavor than freshwater unagi, and the preparation here is precise without being formal. The restaurant sits in the small shopping lane between the ferry terminal and the main shrine, so it makes a natural lunch stop during a day on the island.
