Overview

Top-100-ranked sunset over Japan's 7th-largest lake, framed by a silhouetted island.

The western shore of Japan's seventh-largest lake is ranked among the country's Top 100 sunset locations. From the purpose-built terrace near the Shimane Art Museum, the sun descends behind Yomegashima island, painting the brackish lake in orange and violet. Summer fireworks festivals launched from barges add another dimension to the lakeside experience.

Local tips

Lake Shinji's sunsets are officially listed among Japan's six most beautiful evening views. The Shimane Art Museum on the lakefront has a curved wooden terrace designed to face the sunset directly over the lake, open without charge until 30 minutes after sunset. The effect is most dramatic from October through February when the sun descends directly over the water from Matsue's perspective. The lake's shijimi clams are fished from small wooden boats at dawn; the fishermen's silhouettes at sunrise are a secondary photographic subject.
