Most remote of the Inner Eight Lakes around Mt. Fuji, located 9 kilometers northwest of Lake Shojiko at 850 meters elevation, partly ringed by the slopes of Mt. Hirugadake. High-altitude mist frequently lingers over the water, giving the lake a quiet, otherworldly atmosphere. Edo-period Fuji-ko pilgrimage confraternities considered it a sacred site and erected a stone monument to the dragon god Ozaki Ryujin on the shore. How those pilgrims reached this remote lake is still uncertain, though researchers suggest they crossed Onnazaka Pass or followed ridgeline routes connecting the villages along the mountain's shoulder.
