Overview

Four walking trails circle Lake Onneto and the lower slopes of Mt. Meakan in Akan-Mashu National Park. The shortest takes 40 minutes along the eastern lakeshore, where rust-colored water from Nishiki Pond flows into the vivid blue lake. A separate trail leads to Onneto Yunotaki Falls, a geothermal waterfall staining its rocks black with naturally occurring manganese oxide, a rare earth mineral designated a National Natural Monument in 2000. A longer route climbs to a lookout with views of both the lake and Mt. Meakan. The forest shifts from Sakhalin spruce near the volcano to broad-leaved hardwoods closer to the lakeshore.
