Lake Karikomi is the larger of two secluded mountain lakes in the northern reaches of Okunikko.
Larger of two connected mountain lakes in northern Okunikko, formed thousands of years ago when lava from Mt. Mitsudake blocked the valley's outflow. The lake is roughly 600 meters wide and up to 15 meters deep, with no visible surface streams or rivers, leading researchers to believe it drains through subterranean channels. The surrounding area is noted for pristine forest, volcanic outcroppings, and dense moss covering trees, rocks, and the hiking trail itself. According to a local legend, the Buddhist priest Shodo Shonin named the lakes after slaying a giant serpent that had been terrorizing the area. The lake is about 70 minutes on foot from the Yumoto Onsen trailhead.
