Lake Jusanko

Lake Jusanko in Aomori Prefecture is an estuary lake connected to the Sea of Japan, ringed by pine forests and known for its population of Yamato shijimi, a freshwater clam that features in the regional cuisine. Cycling trails run along the shoreline, and birdwatching is good throughout the year with a range of waterfowl visible from the lakeside paths. The lake's remote location means it sees fewer visitors than Aomori's more obvious attractions, and the pace here is genuinely slow. A small visitor center near the shore provides information on the local ecology. The clams are served at a handful of restaurants in Goshogawara, and shijimi miso soup from this lake has a reputation that extends well beyond the region.
