Lake Asumiko and Lake Senzuko

Lake Asumiko, depicted by Hokusai in his One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, was once called Lotus Lake and served as a gathering point for pilgrims heading toward Mt. Fuji via the Toriichi Pass. Several households on its shores operated mountain lodges on Fuji's slopes. Lake Senzuko, a later addition to the Inner Eight Lakes pilgrimage circuit, sat about three kilometers from the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine where climbers began the Yoshida Ascending Route. Pilgrims performed purification rites in the lake before ascending. The lake no longer exists, but the spring that filled it still flows through a culvert to the shrine's hand-washing basins.
