Lake Ashinoko
芦ノ湖
Overview
Caldera lake formed after Mt. Hakone erupted 3,000 years ago, famed for Mt. Fuji views.
Lake Ashi in Hakone formed about 3,000 years ago when a volcanic eruption blocked the Haya River, creating a lake up to 43.5 meters deep. Because geothermal springs feed it, the water never freezes in winter. The lake's most famous legend involves priest Mangan Shonin, who in 757 sat in the water for three days straight to subdue a dragon terrorizing the village. The dragon eventually apologized and transformed into Kuzuryu, a nine-headed protector deity, honored each July 31 during the Kosui Festival. On clear days, sightseeing boats crossing the lake offer views of Mt. Fuji framed alongside the red torii of Hakone Shrine.
Local tips
The pirate ship is touristy but the views of Fuji from the lake are unbeatable on a clear day. Morning has the best visibility.
