The Kyoto Imperial Palace housed Japan's emperors until the court left for Tokyo in 1869. Unlike most palace tours, this one needs no reservation and costs nothing: walk the Shishinden ceremonial courtyard and pond garden at your own pace. It closes Mondays. Imadegawa Station on the Karasuma line leaves you a five-minute walk from the gate.
