Kurokawa Noh-no-Sato Ogi Kaikan

Kurokawa Noh has been performed at Kasuga Jinja Shrine in the Tsuruoka area for over 500 years, with all performers being farmers and shrine parishioners rather than professional actors. Two all-male troupes pass the repertoire down through generations within the community. The style predates formal noh schools and retains distinct characteristics from its sarugaku origins. The main annual performance is held February 1 and 2 during the Ogi Festival to celebrate the lunar New Year, starting at 6pm on the first evening. Other performances include candlelight noh in mid-October and torchlight noh on water in August. Kurokawa Noh-no-Sato Ogi Kaikan is the community preservation center where visitors can learn about the tradition's history and sometimes interact with performers.
