Kurobe Dam
landmark
黒部ダム
Massive dam completed in 1963 featuring an observation deck for dramatic river & mountain views.
Japan's tallest dam at 186 meters took seven years and claimed 171 lives to complete, taming the powerful Kurobe River deep in the Northern Alps. The dam's dramatic water discharge between June and October creates rainbow-laced curtains of mist against the mountain backdrop. Reached via the scenic Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the observation deck offers vertiginous views into the emerald reservoir and surrounding peaks.
