久礼八幡宮
Fishing-village shrine in Nakatosa where autumn festivals feature boats and prayers for ocean safety.
Kure Hachimangu is a coastal shrine in Nakatosa on the Kochi Prefecture shoreline, close to the Tosa Kuroshio Sea kayaking area. The shrine overlooks the Pacific from a raised position above the fishing harbor, and the torii facing the sea is visible from the water. Hachimangu shrines are dedicated to the deity of archery and war, and this one has maintained close ties with the local fishing community for generations. The approach path is short but passes through a compact grove of old trees. It works well as a stop on the scenic coastal road through southern Kochi, particularly in combination with the nearby Shimanto River delta or the surfing beaches at Irino.
Purify your hands at the temizuya before approaching the main hall. Left hand first, then right, then pour water into your left hand to rinse your mouth.
