Overview

Two-day summer Utsubuki Festival culminating in fireworks display beside Tengawa River each August.

Kurayoshi's most recognizable feature is the preserved district of white-walled merchant storehouses with red roof tiles, their reflections floating in the Tama River canal running through the town center. Walk between sake breweries, craft shops, and small museums housed in converted warehouses on a scale compact enough to cover comfortably on foot. Each August, the Utsubuki Festival culminates in fireworks over the Tengawa River. A short bus ride into the mountains brings you to Misasa Onsen, one of the world's most radium-rich hot spring towns. Together they make for a full and rewarding day in a part of Tottori that rewards the detour.
