Overview

Hasami town ceramic center adjacent to Arita, showcasing Kyushu's renowned ceramic craftsmanship.

Japan is home to numerous styles of beautiful ceramic-ware and Kyushu is a particularly excellent place to experience this sublime form of Japanese craftsmanship. The town of Hasami is adjacent to Arita, whose wares are similarly sold under the "Imari" label. In Hasami however the local style of ceramic-ware was considerably more subdued than that in Arita, where both colors and designs were often quite ostentatious. Produced as both earthenware and later as porcelain, Hasami-style ceramics features celadon-blue glazing. The more affordable price tag of Hasami-ware also made the form widely popular among the general populace. Thick porcelain bowls known as "kurawanka" were adopted and used widely in many Japanese households.
