Kunouzan Toshogu
shrine
久能山東照宮
Original Toshogu shrine where Ieyasu was first enshrined, with 1,159 stone steps and Nikko-rival carvings.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was originally enshrined here in 1617 before Nikko's more famous Toshogu was built, making this the first and most historically significant Toshogu shrine. The vermillion and gold gongen-zukuri architecture clings to a steep mountainside with 1,159 stone steps from the coast, or a ropeway from Nihondaira. The elaborate carvings rival Nikko's but attract a fraction of the visitors.
